So, This is the reason I have been quite quiet this last year. I have bee working as a full time, in house Storyboard artist on Digby Dragon! (And... I've also written one of the episodes) Its been very hush hush, This is probably the first image of the final Digby and friends available on the internet, before there was just the original pilot and old designs when it was aimed at a much younger audience (I've also included below- its very interesting how far it's come) MORE SOON!!!
From my first year at the NFTS, this is my 'Project Two' film. Project two focused on character development and gave us the chance to work with voice actors for the first time.
The only rules we had was using our character, and someone else's- we have to make them hug. My
character was 'Simon', a Bat with anger management issues... the
character I got was 'Vincent', an elderly Cartographer who is bitter
with the world... not the most likely to hug.
The film is done
completely in Biro (Ball point Pen) on paper (using a light box) Being
in able to make mistakes sped me up- as I only had a few weeks to make
the film. The set up is- Simon and Vincent meet in the canteen of a
community centre. Vincent has been to Calligraphy class, Simon to Anger
management.
My Top animating speed on this
project was 112 Frames (Individual drawings) a day- but I did have to
sellotape the Biro to my hand, due to RSI... I could only keep up
that speed for about 2 days (@_@)
Project 2 was based around designing and developing a character. Once we had a fully developed character, we were then asked to take on someone else's character and create a short animated film in which they hug. My character was a bat called Simon, his back story was that he used to own a pub in Hull, but lost it when he was arrested for attempted arson on a rivals pub. As part of his probation, he was asked to attend anger management classes. The character I received was an elderly retired cartographer called Vincent, created by Daniela Negrin. Unable to travel as he once did, Vincent is fairly bitter towards the world, considering himself above most people.
The film is set in one of the few places I could think of in which people like this would meet. Simon just leaving his Anger management class, and Vincent taking a break from his calligraphy class, meet in the canteen of their local community center- host to many self help and night classes.
I used Biro on paper to animate the film, and somehow got it done within four weeks. I got through about 5 pens, one and a half boxes of animation paper and a pad of dope sheets (ye olde animation style)
